Defoe reports are completely false – Hodgson
Roy Hodgson has rubbished reports claiming Crystal Palace failed in a move for Jermain Defoe this month.
With Defoe’s playing time at Bournemouth severely reduced this season, the former England international recently signed an 18-month loan deal at Scottish outfit Rangers, reuniting with ex-Three Lions team-mate Steven Gerrard.
However, reports are suggesting the 36-year-old made the move to Ibrox after turning down the opportunity to move to Selhurst Park on loan until the end of the campaign.
But, when quizzed about these rumours, Hodgson categorically denied them and said the Eagles did not try to sign the striker.
He said at a press conference: ‘That’s not true. We had no interest. I saw his name mentioned in relation to the club. But it’s one thing people relating their players to our club, and another thing our club initiating moves to sign a player.
‘I can state categorically we made no move at all to sign Jermain Defoe. I like Defoe – I’ve worked with him and think he’s a good player. I’m pleased he’s gone to Rangers but we were never one of the candidates for his signature.’
