Lingard promises Wembley wonder against Spurs
Jesse Lingard says Manchester United will not sacrifice their principles when they head to Wembley on Sunday.
Caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen five straight wins after being handed the reins on the back of Jose Mourinho’s departure in December, but this match against Tottenham has always lurked as his first real test.
The freedom United have exhibited under the Norwegian has led to questions about the squad’s mentality, but Lingard says they will not change their tactics for the trip to HA9.
Spurs themselves are mounting a title challenge, but the England midfielder says a club such as his has a duty to perform whoever they play against.
‘It’s going to be tough but, with the run we’ve been on at the moment and the form we’ve had, we back ourselves 100 per cent,’ Lingard said.
‘So, we go there with the full intention of winning and getting the three points. We’re on a great run at the moment, so to carry it on against Tottenham and to get the win would be perfect.
‘It’ll be exciting. Obviously, as a Man United team, we’re there to entertain and get people off their seats, so that’s what we’ll be looking to do.
‘They are always exciting games [against Tottenham]. They have always been entertaining, so hopefully we can put on a show and put on a performance.’
United’s resurgence under Solskjaer has led to suggestions that they could break back into the top-four contention and punters may look to use their free bet to back the Red Devils for a Champions League finish.
