Okoye to be handed Nigeria opportunity

Fortuna Dusseldorf goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is reportedly set for a call-up to Nigeria's national team.

Fortuna Dusseldorf goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is reportedly set for a call-up to Nigeria’s national team.

Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Okoye does have the option of playing for both countries although he made it clear back in December that he wants to represent the Super Eagles.

When asked about playing for Nigeria, he was quoted as saying by aoifootball.

com: ‘Yes, I hope so.

I feel so confident right now and I’m getting better by the day.

I hope that I get the chance cause I know I will take it and could help the Super Eagles in my own little way.

‘Every player dreams of playing for their national team and if I get invited to the team it will be a huge step in my career and a proud moment for me.

‘ Having impressed for Dusseldorf II this season, the 19-year-old shot-stopper is now being lined-up by Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr, who has been looking at the keeper for several months.

The Super Eagles have a dead-rubber Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Seychelles in March and Okoye is expected to be named in the squad for the first time.
