Van Bommel wants focus on wins
Mark van Bommel says PSV must focus on winning their remaining games rather than cutting Ajax’s goal difference lead.
PSV and Ajax are level on 71 points at the top of the Eredivisie table with five games remaining, but the Amsterdam club have scored 100 goals and lead the way with a +74 goal difference – nine better than Van Bommel’s men.
The PSV head coach says his side cannot afford to get distracted by trying to chip away at that advantage and must make sure they win their remaining fixtures if they are to land the title.
‘We know Ajax lead the pack on goal difference, but it would not make sense to just go out and look to earn a victory with a large winning margin,’ he told reporters.
‘Winning the game is always our main priority and Sunday will not be any different.
‘ He added: ‘Scoring a lot of goals is easier said than done.
‘We have netted an amazing 87 goals this season, which is not too bad.
But there is one team [Ajax] that has found the back of the net even more.
‘ Both of the title contenders take on clubs currently in the relegation spots this weekend.
PSV host De Graafschap on Sunday and Ajax are at home against Excelsior on Saturday.
