Celtic boss Lennon ignores ‘nonsense’ speculation

Speculation over who Celtic’s manager will be next season is ‘just noise and nonsense’, says current incumbent Neil Lennon.

The 47-year-old was appointed on a temporary basis at Parkhead in February when Brendan Rodgers left to join Premier League Leicester.

However, with Celtic having won six and drawn two of their games under Lennon – results which include a victory over arch rivals Rangers and a Scottish Cup semi-final triumph over Aberdeen on Sunday – the club’s board is now facing a tricky decision over whether he should stay at the helm or not.

Recent reports have linked both ex-Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas and current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez with the role.

Major shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell will be the key decision-makers and, speaking after the 3-0 win over Aberdeen, Lennon said: ‘I spoke to Dermot on Saturday and he said all the speculation is just noise and nonsense.

‘I knew that anyway because these are class people I work for.

I’ve worked for them before and know the way they work.

‘He (Desmond) is a tough man.

He is very demanding, but that’s why he is who he is.

Again, I’ve had no guarantees, no reassurances, no promises.

‘I’m here to do a job and I’m taking it game by game.

‘ He added: ‘If the club perceives the best way forward is to go somewhere else, then who am I to argue with that? ‘That’s for other people to decide.

Then I’ve got a decision as well.

Celtic will meet Hearts in the Scottish Cup final on May 25 when they will likely to playing to complete a hat-trick of domestic Trebles.

Having already won the League Cup, they could wrap up the Premiership title this weekend.
