Chairman Dave King says Rangers are close to becoming the ‘dominant force’ in Scottish football again.

In an open letter to fans, released as season tickets for 2019/20 went on sale, King admitted the team ‘required a further upgrade’ but added recruitment plans for the summer transfer window had already been made.

Rangers have again had to play second fiddle to Glasgow rivals Celtic this season with the Hoops on course to win the Treble for the third year in a row.

They currently lead Rangers by 11 points in the Premiership title race with just five games to play.

However, King insists his club are closing in on Celtic having progressed under Steven Gerrard, who was appointed manager at Ibrox last summer.

King wrote: ‘It was never going to be easy and it is extremely gratifying to have witnessed the progress that has been made over the last year.

We are now within tangible reach of Rangers becoming the dominant force in Scottish football again.

‘It is clear that the playing squad is significantly stronger than in recent seasons and, importantly for future transfer activity, the overall value of the squad has greatly increased.

‘The team requires a further upgrade and the board will continue to back Mark [Allen, director of football] and Steven, who fully understand that Rangers must win titles and cups, and plans are already in place for recruitment in the summer window.

‘ The announcement came as season ticket prices were increased by five per cent but King vowed: ‘Every fan should know that the season-ticket revenue will solely go towards the first-team squad.’
