Wood backs team-mate for England call
Burnley striker Chris Wood believes team-mate Ashley Barnes could offer something different for England.
The pair have bagged 10 goals each this season in the Premier League and Wood feels his team-mate is deserving of an international call.
Barnes’ haul matches that of Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who has already made 31 appearances for England, but he doesn’t appear to be in Gareth Southgate’s plans.
The 29-year-old has represented Austria at Under-20 level but looks unlikely to feature for their senior side after his application for citizenship was rejected in February.
Wood feels England don’t have anyone similar to Barnes and is confident he has all the attributes to be a success on the international stage.
‘I am surprised yeah because he causes defences a hell of a lot of problems.
He could do that on the international stage as well,’ said Wood.
‘I’d like to think he will get one very soon.
He should have had one by now.
He’s a menace, causes a lot of problems.
I’m just glad I don’t have to defend against him.
‘England don’t have anyone like him, I think he would add value to the England squad, definitely.
‘He’s scoring goals, but he also does well to get other people into positions to score some goals.
He has an all-round game, he works tirelessly on centre-halves and doesn’t give them a minute’s peace.’
