Hasenhuttl putting Redmond centre stage
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has challenged Nathan Redmond to prove he deserves to be a central part of the team going forward.
Redmond has been criticised for failing to realise his potential at times in his career but has shown greater consistency in recent months and was instrumental in the Saints’ successful survival push.
Hasenhuttl has been keen to push the 25-year-old harder and the policy has worked well, with the one-cap England international earning the Player of the Season award.
The Austrian coach wants to see further improvement next season, urging the former Birmingham and Norwich man to justify the faith he is showing by making him part of the squad’s leadership group.
He is quoted as saying by the Daily Echo: ‘It’s details and a lot of things I want to see from him next year also but in general it’s a lot about taking a lot of responsibility for the team because he’s now a very experienced player, a few years here now and a guy we want to build the team around.
‘He, Pierre Hojbjerg and a few more players we have a good core and that’s the reason why we want to build a new team around these guys.’
