Leeds play-off woe opens door for Saints’ Phillips raid
Southampton are being linked with a raid on Leeds United for midfielder Kalvin Phillips after they crashed out of the play-offs.
The Saints have reportedly been keeping tabs on the highly-rated 23-year-old, who can also operate in a central defensive role if required.
Phillips has been a regular in Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa’s plans throughout this past season as the side battled it out for promotion at the top of the Championship.
However, after losing out on automatic promotion, Leeds were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Derby in the play-off semi-finals after the Rams recovered from a 1-0 first-leg home defeat to win 4-2 at Elland Road on Wednesday night.
It means with no Premier League football at Leeds next season, Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl could now make a move to try and lure Phillips to St Mary’s.
Despite his age, Phillips is edging towards 150 first-team appearances and was named in the Championship team of the season for 2018-19.
Leeds are believed to be looking for around £20million for Phillips’ signature, which could prove to be a stumbling block given that he has no Premier League experience.
