Liverpool man rues injury troubles
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez admits it has been hard to watch his team’s great season from afar while injured.
Earlier this season, the young England defender was beginning to to establish himself as the first-choice central defender to partner Virgil van Dijk.
However, a bad leg injury from an innocuous looking challenge away at Burnley in December cost Gomez his place for most of the remainder of the campaign.
He has made sporadic appearances since recovering from the leg fracture in April, with his only start being in the 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi final.
And, the 21-year-old former Charlton defender says it has been hard to watch his teammates enjoy the thrill of a title run in and their run to another Champions League final.
‘It’s probably underestimated a bit how much it can affect us as footballers,’ he told liverpoolfc.com.
‘Like it might just seem that you’re injured and now you just watch the boys, but it hurts – especially a year like this that was pretty historic.
‘To watch a large majority of those games, having had a taste of it at the beginning, was difficult to take.
‘Obviously it was nice to overcome it and get a bit of involvement at the end.
‘We’ve just got to move on now and we’ve got a big game.
There’s a lot of ups and downs, but it’s all a learning curve.’
