Benkovic open to Celtic stay
On-loan Celtic defender Filip Benkovic admits he could remain at the club beyond the end of the season.
The 21-year-old originally joined the Bhoys on a season-long loan from Leicester last summer and, despite some minor injury concerns, he has impressed, featuring 27 times across all competitions.
Benkovic has played his part in Celtic’s pursuit of a third-successive domestic treble, a feat they can achieve if they beat Hearts in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final.
The former Dinamo Zagreb player has now also indicated that he could be tempted to remain at the club next season, although his future will not be resolved until the summer.
‘I can’t talk about what club I will be at next year because nothing is known yet and might not be for some time, probably only after all my international duties this summer,’ Benkovic was quoted as saying by the Daily Record.
‘But all I can say is that I have really enjoyed my time at Celtic, I have had some great moments here, I have a successful season, enjoyed my football and I will never regret it.
‘ Benkovic has also earned his first call-up to Zlatko Dalic’s senior Croatia squad for next month’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Wales and has been quick to thank Celtic for helping him earn international recognition.
‘It’s a great honour for me to be included in the squad for the first time.
I have no words to describe my happiness,’ he added.
‘I’m proud of everything we’ve done this season in Celtic, I’m very pleased.
And the invitation to the national team has crowned my season.’
