Schar happy with debut season
Fabian Schar believes he enjoyed a successful first season with Newcastle despite making a slow start.
Switzerland international Schar was a low-key arrival at St James’ Park when he joined from Deportivo La Coruna last summer and things did not initially go smoothly, with the Magpies failing to win any of their opening 10 Premier League games and looking destined to be embroiled in a relegation battle.
However, both Newcastle and Schar’s fortunes improved over the second half of the season, with the 27-year-old ending the campaign third in the club’s scoring charts with four goals, a tally that includes a brace against Cardiff and a wonder strike in the 2-0 victory over Burnley in February.
Rafael Benitez’ side finished the campaign in 13th place – 11 points clear of the relegation zone – and Schar feels his first season has ultimately proved a success.
‘I had a quite hard start, like the whole team.
I think the whole team struggled a lot the first 10 games, but then we started getting points and doing a good job over the whole season,’ Schar was quoted as saying by The Chronicle.
‘I think, for me and the team, the second part was quite good and we can be proud of the end.
For me, it was also a quite good season when I look now.
‘ Schar is certainly loving life in the Premier League and is hoping to enjoy further progress next season.
He added: ‘I enjoy playing in the Premier League, especially for this club and these amazing fans.
I look forward for the next year.’
