Reds ‘probe’ Watford striker deal
Liverpool are reportedly thinking of hijacking Watford’s deal to sign Fluninense forward Joao Pedro when he turns 18.
Eyebrows were raised when Watford sewed up an agreement to sign the 17-year-old forward last year for 2.
5m euros – rising to 10m with bonuses – because he was nowhere near the Fluminense first-team at that point.
But he has developed at a rapid rate and scored a superb hat-trick in Flu’s 4-1 Copa Sudamericana win over Atletico Nacional on Thursday night.
Liverpool had a scout at the Maracana for that match and it has since been reported that the Reds have probed the Watford deal to see if it is watertight.
The deal is essentially still only a promise but Goloboesporte claim Watford inserted a clause that would mean Fluminense had to pay them 20m euros if they wanted to get out of the arrangement.
Therefore, any offer in excess of 30m euros would be a better outcome for Fluminense than the original deal with Watford.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool would go that high for a teenager but they will have noted how much profit Watford made when selling Richarlison quickly to Everton last year.
