Manchester City’s hopes of signing Benfica starlet Joao Felix in this transfer window could be scuppered by Atletico Madrid.

The Citizens were believed to be leading the chase for the highly-rated 19-year-old, who has already been dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo.

There is a release clause of £106million in his current contract, and Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has hinted that Felix will depart at some point this summer if that valuation is met.

Manchester United have also been mentioned as a potential suitor, but with no Champions League football on offer at Old Trafford, City were sitting ahead of them in the running.

Atletico have now entered the fray as they look to compensate for the expected departures of Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann.

The Portugal international will make no decision on his future until after a summer holiday, but reports are suggesting that his agent, Jorge Mendes, will recommend a move to the La Liga outfit.
