Gunn – I did everything I could

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn says he was pleased to come through a number of difficult months during his debut campaign with Southampton.

The England international agreed to join the Saints last summer, but he was forced to wait for a first-team chance due to the form of Alex McCarthy.

Gunn was handed his Premier League debut in January by coach Ralph Hasenhuttl and he eventually went on to make 12 appearances as the south coast club avoided relegation by five points.

The 23-year-old is now looking ahead to next season where he claims he still has more work to do on his game to fend off McCarthy and third-choice stopper Fraser Forster.

He told the Daily Echo: ‘I knew that when I got my chance, I had to take it.

Looking back now, I think I did as well as I possibly could.

‘His [Hasenhuttl’s] philosophy of football means that we press very high and that we are always on the front foot and if the goalkeeper isn’t a part of that it makes it more difficult for the defenders in front.

‘That’s a part of my game and part of my game that he likes, so I’m just trying to improve on that.’
