Keita included in Guinea squad
Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has been named in Guinea’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations despite concerns over his fitness.
The 24-year-old is still recovering from the thigh injury he picked up during the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona at the beginning of May and he was the last player to link-up with the Guinea squad at their tournament warm-up base in Marrakech earlier this week.
Keita also sat out Guinea’s friendly defeat to Benin on Tuesday but has now been named in Paul Put’s final 23-man squad despite admitting he is not fully fit.
‘I am not 100%,’ Keita admitted in a television interview on the Guinea Football Federation Facebook page.
‘But when I was in Liverpool, I started training with the ball.
As I’m here now I’m going to train with the team to see.
‘ The former RB Leipzig star has now moved to reassure Guinea supporters that he is confident he will be fit for their tournament opener against Madagascar on June 22.
He added: ‘I want to reassure the Guinean fans, the coach and my team-mates that I think I’ll be ready for the first match.’
