Goalkeeper Conor Mitchell has joined NIFL Premiership club Larne on a free transfer after his contract with Burnley expired.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international came through the ranks at Turf Moor but never made a first-team appearance, although he did spend time on loan at both St Johnstone and Linfield last season.

The 23-year-old was informed by Clarets boss Sean Dyche that his contract would not be renewed this summer, but he has not had to wait long to find a new club, as he has joined a Larne team that earned promotion back to the top flight in Northern Ireland last season.

Mitchell admits he faced a worrying time after leaving Burnley, as he did not have another club lined up, but he is happy to have now got his future sorted out.

‘It’s been a strange period for me, the first of my career where I was a free agent,’ Mitchell told the Larne website.

‘I knew I wasn’t going to be at Burnley anymore and had a few options on the table, but spoke to Tiernan [Lynch, Larne manager] and was really drawn into this project – and the pull of full-time football was a big thing.’
