AFC Wimbledon manager Wally Downes has urged Paul Kalambayi to take the next step in his development after the defender signed a new contract.

Kalambayi, who turns 20 next month, made his league debut in January and went on to make 18 appearances as the club escaped relegation from League One on goal difference.

‘Paul has been terrific.

He had a little period after making his debut when he had to come out of the team, but his attitude was fantastic,’ Downes told afcwimbledon.co.uk.

‘It is a critical period for him now because he’s in the team and learning on the job.

‘He has learned on the job really well and he was a big part of everything we did last season.

He needs to be working on his overall game all of the time.’
