Newport manager Michael Flynn has hailed as ‘a big coup’ the signing of full-back Daniel Leadbitter on a two-year deal.

The 28-year-old opted against penning a new contract with Bristol Rovers after spending five years with the club and helping them to back-to-back promotions from the National League into League One over the past two seasons.

Flynn told the club’s website:’Daniel is a big signing for us.

He is a big coup for us.

Dan is very fit and quick, we have beaten off competition for him and I’m really looking forward to working with him this season.

‘ Leadbitter, who started out as a trainee with home-town club Newcastle before moving on to Torquay, Hereford and then Rovers, said:’I’m delighted to sign with Newport.

‘I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the lads and starting pre-season.

‘The manager was a big part in me signing my deal and it sounds like a great club to be a part of.

I can’t wait to get started.’
