Girona forward Portu rejects Seagulls to join Real Sociedad
Brighton’s hopes of signing Girona striker Portu have been dashed after he agreed a switch to Real Sociedad.
The Seagulls and Premier League rivals West Ham were both linked with a move for the £9million-rated forward, whose full name is Cristian Portugues Manzanera.
The 27-year-old impressed last season in a disappointing Girona side that were relegated from La Liga after finishing 18th in the standings.
Portu scored six goals in the Spanish top flight and bagged 11 the previous season, which alerted several suitors.
However, the player has now decided to snub England in favour of staying in Spain with La Real.
Portu said on Twitter: ‘I accept the challenge and the opportunity that Real Sociedad have offered me, wearing the txuri-urdin shirt is a great responsibility.
‘I know what the club represents for her fans, but I’m sure I will not disappoint you.’
