Barca ‘suffer’ due to Messi – LVG
Former Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal feels Lionel Messi needs to become more of a team player if the Catalans are to triumph in the Champions League.
Messi has won Europe’s elite club competition four times with Barca – but not since 2015 – and last season’s dramatic semi-final loss to Liverpool will live long in the fans’ memories for the wrong reasons.
The Argentina ace’s contribution was superb once again, with 51 goals from 50 appearances in all competitions and 12 in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Van Gaal, who managed Barca in two seperate spells, pulled no punches in his assessment of the South American.
‘I believe that there is nothing more important than the team player,’ the 67-year-old told EL Pais.
‘Barca suffer from that.
I think Messi should ask himself how it is possible that he’s gone so long without winning a Champions League.
‘Look at Barcelona.
How many Champions Leagues have they won with the one everybody says is the best player in the world? ‘Look at Neymar at PSG.
How many Champions Leagues has he won? ‘He’s the best individual player in the world because his stats are amazing.
But why hasn’t he won a Champions League for five years?’
