Benitez set for Newcastle departure
Rafael Benitez seems set to depart Newcastle at the end of the month as no further contract talks will take place.
Benitez is due to fall out of contract on June 30 and it appears as if he will be leaving St James’ Park.
The manager held discussions with owner Mike Ashley for talks last month and a one-year deal was proposed, but the deal remains unsigned as Benitez was not given the assurances he wanted regarding investment and ambition.
Ashley remains in talks with several parties interested in buying the club, including the Bin Zayed Group, but with no takeover agreed and a resolution looking increasingly unlikely it seems as if Benitez is ready to walk away.
The Times report Newcastle are not planning any further talks with the 59-year-old and unless there is a breakthrough regarding any potential takeover Benitez is expected to leave at the end of the week.
Newcastle are expected to begin a hunt for a new manager in the coming days and Garry Monk, who was sacked by Birmingham City earlier this month, has emerged as an early contender.
