Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that he tried and failed to lure midfielder Charles Aranguiz to West Ham from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Hammers boss revealed the 30-year-old Chile international is one of several compatriots he has either signed or been interested in signing during his time in managerial positions.

Aranguiz had already snubbed a move to England in the past with Leicester City and Pellegrini revealed he was also rebuffed by the player when trying to bolster the squad at the London Stadium in a previous transfer window.

He said: ‘I will not talk about conversations, but I can tell you that I would have loved to have many Chilean players who have been figures worldwide.

‘In the past I took several: Salas, Rojas, Matias Fernandez, Iturra, Moras; I have taken seven or eight Chilean players.

I tried to take Aranguiz to West Ham, but he did not want to.

‘ Pellegrini has instead attempted to plug the creativity gap in his ranks this summer by bringing in Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals in a £24million deal from Villarreal.
