Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has backed Mikel Arteta to eventually replace Pep Guardiola in the dugout.

The Belgium international confirmed last month that he would be ending his 11-year association with City this summer to take up a player-manager role with Anderlecht.

Kompany officially starts his new job on July 1 but has already returned to his boyhood club to get the wheels in motion as he looks to add to the squad.

City boss Guardiola recently suggested that Kompany could potentially return to the Etihad in a managerial position in the future, however, the defender has played that down.

He believes former Arsenal midfielder Arteta, who has been working as Guardiola’s assistant over the past few years, is the perfect man to step up when there is a change in the dugout.

Kompany said: ‘Let me start with this.

Let City be City under Pep which is an awesome club.

I think they will win the Champions League eventually, soon hopefully, and behind Pep there is Mikel Arteta who has a lot of knowledge who probably is the right man to look at.’
