Sheffield Wednesday sign German defender Borner
Sheffield Wednesday have signed German free agent Julian Borner on an undisclosed deal.
Central defender Borner was out of contract with previous clubArminia Bielefeld and is the Owls’ first summer signing.
‘During his time in Germany, the 28-year-old was known for his strong leadership qualities, defensive play and aerial ability at both ends of the pitch,’ the club said on their official website.
It was recently reported in Germany that Borner had verbally agreed to extend his contract withArminia Bielefeld, but did not put pen to paper.
Borner began his career with Energie Cottbus and in 2014 joined Bielefeld, who he helped win the German third tier title in his first season.
The former Germany Under-18 international was Bielefeld’s captain and made almost 150 appearances for the club.
Wednesday are currently operating under a soft transfer embargo after they filed their accounts to the English Football League after the deadline, but it is understood Borner has been signed within the constraints of the ban.
The clubwere placed under a full transfer embargo between April and August last year under the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability rules.
