Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl says he wants his Southampton side to be a ‘nasty opponent for every team’ in the Premier League this season.

Saints are currently in Hasenhuttl’s native Austria on their pre-season training camp as they continue to prepare for the upcoming campaign.

The Saints boss knows the summer is key to getting players fit for the gruelling demands of the season and he wants to ensure he creates a side nobody enjoys playing against.

He said on the Southampton website: ‘It’s about getting convinced about our strengths, about our automatism and our habits, and if we do that then we know we can be a nasty opponent for every team.

‘ Last term Saints were involved in a relegation scrap but managed to stay up, finishing 16th, five points clear of the bottom three.

They do not want a repeat this season and Hasenhuttl says getting off to a good start will be key, even though Saints have a difficult start with both Liverpool and Manchester United visiting St Mary’s in the first four games, alongside trips to Burnley and Brighton.

He added: ‘The earlier we take points, the less pressure you have during the season.

It’s a long season, we know this, but we don’t want to come another time in this situation where we are struggling or getting a lot of pressure because we are in, or near, the relegation zone.

‘The first four games, we have two at home against big teams, and away they are also not easy games, so it is a tough schedule.

But if you look at the schedule you never know.

Every game you can take something, but every game you can lose.’
