Promotion possible for Swansea – Cooper

Swansea City boss Steve Cooper has revealed he is targeting a returning to the Premier League in his first season in charge.

Cooper left his role as England Under-17 head coach this summer to take charge of the Swans, who lost previous manager Graham Potter to Premier League outfit Brighton in May.

The Welsh side have also lost winger Daniel James, who joined Manchester United for a reported £15million in this transfer window, while Scottish striker Olivier McBurnie remains a target for Sheffield United.

It is thought Swansea will have little money to spend as they look to cut costs, meaning loan deals and free transfers will be relied on to strengthen the squad, but Cooper is adamant his side can push for promotion.

‘There’s no reason why we can’t have a promotion push this year,’ he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

‘For me, that’s ambition, that’s motivation – it’s something to aim for.

‘I don’t think anybody is going to say we can finish top of the league, score this many goals or get that many points.

That would be an unrealistic aim.

But a promotion push for me is something we are going to go for.’
