Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook says it is ‘obvious’ his team are in need of new recruits ahead of the new season.

The Latics finished 18th in the Championship last season after winning promotion from League One.

However, this summer has seen some of their most important players head for the exit door, with Nick Powell being allowed to leave the club on a free transfer to join Stoke City, while Reece James has headed back to Chelsea following his successful year-long spell.

They have only brought in goalkeeper David Marshall from Hull so far this summer and Cook admits he needs more to survive in the division again.

‘At the moment, we’re in a position where it’s quite obvious we are looking to strengthen – we need to strengthen,’ he told the Wigan Post.

‘It’s so hard this time of year for managers and fans because you want to be able to report good news.

‘But you also don’t want to talk about things that might not materialise.

‘We’re working really hard behind the scenes, everyone’s doing the best they can to try to bring some more players in.

‘But it’s just a waiting game that has to be played – both in terms of loan signings and also permanent deals.’
