AFCON final will be tough – Mahrez
Riyad Mahrez hailed Algeria’s ‘unbelievable’ Africa Cup of Nations semi-final victory and expects a tough final against Senegal.
The Desert Foxes pulled off a 2-1 triumph over Nigeria on Sunday to book their place in Friday’s Egypt showpiece.
Manchester City’s Mahrez was influential throughout the match as his deflected cross in the first half forced an own goal from William Troost-Ekong to give Algeria the lead.
Odion Ighalo levelled affairs with a 72nd-minute penalty, awarded by VAR, but the former Leicester City midfielder then stepped up to fire home a superb free-kick five minutes into injury time to send his side into the final.
Waiting will be a Senegal side who progressed with a 1-0 success over Tunisia, with defender Dylan Bronn notching an extra-time own goal to settle the contest.
Mahrez was delighted to make it to the final but knows Senegal will be a tough nut to crack.
‘We are very happy because to be in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations is something unbelievable,’ he said.
‘I think we have been very good in this tournament.
We scored 12 goals and conceded two, that is the source of our confidence.
‘We are looking forward to the final against Senegal.
We played them in the group stage and we are expecting another tough game.’
