Smith wants Villa to ‘peak’ for Spurs test
Dean Smith has been happy with Aston Villa’s work in pre-season so far and hopes his squad ‘peak’ when they take on Spurs.
Villa secured promotion via the play-offs last season and have been handed a tough opening Premier League fixture at Tottenham on August 10.
Smith is keen for every member of his squad to get minutes in pre-season before they take on the Champions League runners-up.
Villa claimed a 3-0 win over MLS outfit Minnesota United on Wednesday and Smith was happy with that display, but says there is still plenty of work to do before the new campaign starts.
‘Our aim is to get a similar amount of minutes into each player, match minutes so I’ve got the best choice available to me then before that game against Tottenham,’ he told the Birmingham Mail.
‘What’s important for me is making sure we peak the week leading up to the first game against Tottenham, then I’ve got a full squad to choose from.
‘We want a squad of players where the culture and the environment is that they want to win every game.
I think you saw that today.
‘They worked hard, there was a lot of commitment, a lot of loose passes as well, which you’re going to see in pre-season because our players played pretty fatigued tonight due to the intensity of the week we’ve had.’
