Seagulls youngster nets Argentina call-up

Juan Roman Riquelme has urged supporters to allow Lionel Scaloni and his coaching team time to put their stamp on Argentina.

Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister is one of seven uncapped players named in Argentina’s 27-man squad for friendlies against Chile and Mexico.

The 20-year-old, on a season-long loan back in his homeland with Boca Juniors, joins Leonardo Balerdi, Nicolas Figal, Lucas Martinez, Nicolas Dominguez, Lucas Ocampos and Adolfo Gaich as uncapped stars in Lionel Scaloni’s party.

Mac Allister was signed by then Brighton manager Chris Hughton in January 2019, penning a four-and-a-half-year contract at the Amex Stadium but has yet to kick a ball for the first team after being loaned back to Argentinos Juniors for the remainder of the 2018–19 campaign.

He has joined his brother Kevin at Boca, who is on loan from Argentinos Juniors, and will hope to prove he is worth his place with Brighton next term.

Argentina, who finished third at the Copa America, will be without Lionel Messi as the forward serves a suspension, while Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria are also absent as the coach tries to usher in some new faces.

La Albiceleste face Chile in Los Angeles on September 5 before a showdown with Mexico in Texas five days later.
