Senior pair staying for the moment – Cooper

Steve Cooper insists the time was right to move into senior football, despite disappointing England manager Gareth Southgate by accepting the Swansea job.

Steve Cooper says he is working under the assumption both Borja Baston and Andre Ayew will be staying at Swansea City.

Spaniard Borja arrived at the Liberty Stadium in August 2016 for a club-record fee of £15.5million but he has struggled during his time in Wales, scoring just one league goal during his debut campaign before spending the next two seasons on loan at Malaga and Alaves.

As for Ayew, he returned to the Swans in January 2018 after a failed spell at West Ham United but he also spent the previous campaign out on loan, scoring five goals in 29 appearances for Fenerbahce.

Both players have been heavily linked with permanent moves away from the Swans this summer but, as things stand, the duo remains with the Championship outfit and the duo have played a part in the fast start to the season.

Borja has scored three goals from as many games while Ayew made his first outing in the 3-2 victory against Preston North End on Saturday, a result which leaves the Swans unbeaten.

Cooper’s men take on QPR this Wednesday and he spoke about the two players at his press conference, saying: “Trevor and I speak a lot and if there’s news on any situation he’ll tell me.

“He sees how we’re working every day and planning going forward. But that’s not a discussion we’ve had because there is no news at the moment. We have to plan with those two boys.”
