Watford wrap up new deal for rising star Cucho

Cucho Hernandez has penned a new contract with Watford and will spend this season on loan at Real Mallorca.

Hernandez started his senior career with Deportivo Pereira and he scored three goals during his debut season with the club, having featured 22 times in Colombia’s Primera B league.

The forward then netted 20 times during his second campaign, leaving him second in the league’s top goalscorer charts, and a particular highlight was his hat-trick in a 3-0 home success over Tigres in July 2016.

Spanish outfit Granada snapped up the Colombia international in 2017 before sending him out to America de Cali on loan, where he scored just one goal from 17 Primera A appearances.

During his temporary spell, Watford were said to be scouting the Pereira-born star and the Premier League side signed him permanently in 2017 after seeing enough from his performances in his home country.

The 20-year-old has spent the past two seasons on loan at Spanish side Huesca, helping them achieve promotion to La Liga in the 2017/18 campaign before scoring against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia in La Liga last term.

International accolades have also been forthcoming for the forward, who bagged a brace in a senior friendly for Colombia against Costa Rica on his debut in October last year.

There were suggestions Hernandez could force his way into the Hornets’ first-team plans this season but the decision has been made for him to spend this campaign on loan at Mallorca.

Before the temporary stint was confirmed, Watford revealed the Colombian has signed a new contract at Vicarage Road and technical director Filippo Giraldi was delighted with the news.

“We are very pleased with his progress. He had some difficult moments but that is how you grow. You’ve got to have those ups and downs,” he told the club’s official website.

“His goalscoring record was good. He scored away at Valencia, away at Barcelona and away at Real Madrid and I think that’s something only (Sergio) Aguero did. It’s something remarkable and we must be proud of this. He has something different and we must take care of his development.”

Hernandez could be included in Mallorca’s squad for Sunday’s La Liga clash at Valencia, who drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad on the opening weekend before losing 1-0 to Celta Vigo last time out.
