Gomes axed by Royals

Reading boss Jose Gomes has doubts over strikers Nelson Oliveira and Yakou Meite ahead of the clash with Middlesbrough.

Championship strugglers Reading have sacked manager Jose Gomes after less than a year in charge at the Madejski Stadium.

Gomes, 49, took charge of the Royals in December last year and successfully guided the club to survival in the Championship.

However, the Berkshire outfit find themselves in the bottom three going into the international break with just eight points from 11 games, having lost seven of those matches, and the club have now confirmed he has left his position as first-team manager.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Following just two wins in the first 11 league games in 2019-20, owner Mr Yongge Dai has made the difficult decision to part company with Gomes and make a change at first team level.”

Reading are winless in seven in all competitions, a run stretching back to the end of August, and went down 1-0 at Bristol City in what proved to be Gomes’ final game in charge.

The Royals will now begin their hunt for a new manager and former Southampton manager Mark Hughes has already emerged as one possible target.

Former Bolton boss Phil Parkinson, who spent nine years with Reading as a player, could also be an option as he has been linked with the club in the past.

Both Hughes and Parkinson are currently without clubs, while Daniel Stendel may be another contender after he was sacked by fellow Championship club Barnsley earlier this week.
