When Manchester United’s hierarchy gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the position of interim manager, they couldn’t have imagined the impact he would have.

Immediately following the exit of Jose Mourinho, the Norwegian won over the fans that adored him as a player and looks to have connected with the squad.

Those punters eyeing a potential bet via sites like Bettingtop10 will have noticed the way he has integrated the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford back into the first-team plans, with instant results.

Solskjaer won his first eight games in charge in all competitions, then saw his team fight back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Burnley at Old Trafford on January 29.

With Martial becoming the latest player to put pen to paper on a new contract, everything looks to be rosy in the United garden – especially with the Red Devils back in the race for a top-four finish.

So what do the Old Trafford board now decide to do? Stick with Solskjaer or look for another summer appointment? If they do decide to part ways with the Molde coach and make the wrong appointment, they would be back to square one.

But if they stick with the former striker and the early impact wears off, they are then left looking for another option midway through next season.

It’s a tough decision facing the powers-that-be but at least on the field matters are in a better state than they could have been – and they may yet have Champions League football to sell to a new manager.

We are led to believe that Sir Alex Ferguson had a big say in the temporary appointment of Solskjaer and, if asked for his input again, the legendary Scot is likely to be in the Norwegian’s corner.

A lot may also depend on the availability of other potential targets, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino still understood to be top of the list.
