Gunners pair Monreal and Elneny depart the Emirates

Nacho Monreal has left Arsenal after signing a two-year contract with Spanish La Liga outfit Real Sociedad, while Mohamed Elneny has joined Besiktas on loan.

The 33-year-old Spain international, Monreal, joined Arsenal from Malaga in January 2013 and scored 10 goals in 250 appearances for the north Londoners.

Monreal has helped Arsenal to win three FA Cups and three Community Shields in six-and-a-half years, but will now see out the rest of his career in his homeland.

In confirming the deal, thought to be worth around £225,000, Arsenal released a statement which read: “We would like to thank Nacho for his contribution to the club and everyone at Arsenal wishes him the best for his future.”

Monreal had started all three Premier League games so far this season, so his departure is set to give Unai Emery a selection poser ahead of Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.

Kieran Tierney was signed from Celtic in the summer as his long-term replacement but is currently sidelined because of injury until the end of September.

Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin are also absent so Bosnian stopper Sead Kolasinic is the most likely to fill the void created by Monreal’s exit.

Meanwhile, midfielder Elneny has also signed a year-long loan with Turkish side Besiktas ahead of Monday’s European transfer deadline.

The 27-year-old Egypt international was recently told by Emery to find a new club because he could not guarantee him regular action at the Emirates.

Elneny, who joined from Swiss side FC Basel in January 2016 in a deal worth up to £7million, made just eight Premier League appearances last season, with a further seven games played in the Europa League.

But he will now continue his career in Turkey with the Super Lig side, who were in need of midfield options after Chile international Gary Medel left the club to join Italian side Bologna.

An Arsenal statement added: “During his time with us, Mo has made 89 appearances in all competitions and has been a regular in the Egypt national team, featuring for his country in the 2012 Olympics and the 2018 World Cup. He was also a runner-up in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Mo all the best for his season with Besiktas.”
