Emery targets ‘important’ Arsenal win

Arsenal boss Unai Emery is said to be in contact with his former Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier in the hope of landing him.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery says it is crucial his side pick up three points against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners are on a four-game winless run in all competitions heading into this weekend’s contest and defeat in the East Midlands could see them drop as low as 10th in the Premier League.

Currently, Arsenal sit fifth in the table, six points adrift of Leicester and Chelsea, who occupy third and fourth place respectively in the standings, and failure to get back to winning ways on Saturday would heap further pressure on Emery.

Reports are suggesting the Spanish tactician, who took charge at the Emirates in May 2018, could be replaced by former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who has been out of work since leaving his Old Trafford post since December last year.

Emery provided a defiant response to those rumours earlier this week and is now hoping his side can back up his comments with victory at Leicester in the late kick-off on Saturday.

“Yes – we need to win. It’s very important for us tomorrow,” he said. “Our mentality every time is to play fast, be strong and win. Each match we only think to win.”

The Foxes head into the game on a four-game winning run in all competitions, having overcome Burton Albion 3-1 in the EFL Cup while defeating Burnley 2-1, Southampton 9-0 and Crystal Palace 2-0 in the league.

Arsenal have won three of the past five meetings against Leicester and punters may decide to use their free bet on the Gunners picking up a valuable win at the King Power Stadium.

This will be Emery’s 50th Premier League match in charge of Arsenal (W25, D12, L12). None of his previous 49 have ended goalless.
