Guilbert reaping the rewards at Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert says he is doing all he can to improve his game by working with John Terry.

The 24-year-old joined Villa in January for an undisclosed fee but the Midlands outfit allowed him to remain with Caen on loan until the end of the summer.

Guilbert has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the Villa team as manager Dean Smith continues to tinker with his line-up.

Villa are still looking to find their feet in the top flight after their promotion from the Championship last season. Ahmed El Mohamady and Neil Taylor have been given a chance after helping the club come up through the play-offs.

Gilbert has made six appearances for the Villans and has featured at both right-back and left-back. Despite his limited game time, Villa fans have been impressed by his contribution and he claims working with Terry is making him a better player.

He told the Express and Star: “Of course I knew John Terry, not personally, but now I can say yes. When you have a coach like him, when he speaks to you, you just listen and do what he is telling you.

“I speak to him a lot because he was a great defender. He is good to speak with. We have really good staff and quality coaches, so I am happy.”

Guilbert has not done enough to impress France coach Didier Deschamps since his move, with his only international experience coming for the France Under-21s.

However, the former Bordeaux man believes he can do enough to make future squads by playing in the Premier League regularly.

He added: “I know my situation, I know my level, I know my quality. I know there are a lot of good players.”

Guilbert is hoping to be named in the starting XI this weekend when Villa host Brighton.
