We’re not afraid of the big teams – Targett
Aston Villa defender Matt Targett says his side are not fearful of the bigger teams in the division as they head to Chelsea.
The left-back played the full 90 minutes of Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford as Tyrone Mings bagged his first goal in the Premier League to seal a share of the points.
It rounded off a positive week for Dean Smith’s men after they defeated Newcastle United 2-0 at home on Monday night.
The return of Jack Grealish has boosted their ranks after he put in a man-of-the-match display against the Magpies at Villa Park.
Then, he scored a stunning goal at Old Trafford to open the scoring on Sunday.
Villa have had a solid reintroduction to life in the Premier League as they lie 15th in the table.
Goalscoring has not been an issue for the Midlands club this season as they have scored more goals than any other team else in the bottom half of the table.
However, defending has proved more troublesome with Smith’s men conceding 22 goals.
Against the so-called bigger teams, Villa have put in some encouraging performances.
They were narrowly beaten away at Tottenham 3-1 on the opening weekend of the season while two late goals sunk them at Arsenal in a 3-2 defeat.
However, the squad are taking confidence from the Manchester United draw and Targett believes they have nothing to fear as they prepare to go to Stamford Bridge.
“These big teams, we are not afraid of them,” he told reporters. “You look through the results and anyone can beat anyone in this league and that is what makes it so exciting.”
“I think they have more quality [than Manchester United] so we have to be wary of them. But we have competed against Man City for 45 minutes, Arsenal and Tottenham and on Sunday against Manchester United.”
The game marks the start of a tricky run of fixtures as Leicester are the visitors to Villa Park on Sunday before they then face a trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United.
