Lampard highlights importance of European tie

Frank Lampard still searching for his first win as Chelsea boss.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has highlighted the importance of Wednesday's Super Cup clash with Liverpool in Istanbul.

Lampard fell to a heavy defeat in his first competitive game at the helm of Chelsea, losing 4-0 to Manchester United, although the scoreline maybe flattered the home side.

His next assignment is likely to prove even more difficult as the Europa League winners go up against Champions League winners Liverpool at the Besiktas Park in Istanbul.

It’s Lampard’s first taste of European football in the dugout and Liverpool have already laid down an early marker this term by beating Norwich 4-1 in their opening-day fixture.

The former England international has urged his players to recognise the importance of the clash and hopes they can put up more of a fight.

Lampard said: “It’s going to be one of my first competitive games as manager of this club.

“Every player in there needs to be aware of the importance of the game to this club, and we have to give everything because it’s going to be tough.”

Willian missed Sunday’s season-opener due to a knee issue but has travelled with the squad and could play some part, while Antonio Rudiger, who also sat out the Old Trafford trip, is also understood to have flown out to Turkey.

Chelsea have only lost once in their last six meetings with Liverpool and punters using their free bet may want to back them to come out on top.
