Rahman joins Mallorca after penning Blues deal

Chelsea defender Baba Rahman has moved on loan to Spanish club Real Mallorca after signing a one-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge.

Left-back Rahman, who joined the Blues from German side Augsburg in the summer of 2015, is now tied to the Premier League club until 2022.

He will remain in La Liga for the duration of the 2019-20 campaign.

The 25-year-old Ghana international had loan spells with Bundesliga club Schalke and French side Reims last term.

Rahman made his Chelsea debut in a 4-0 Champions League win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in September 2015 and has played 23 times for the club in all competitions.

Mallorca are back in the Spanish top flight having been promoted via the play-offs last season so Rahman will look to impress there this campaign.

Despite his lack of opportunities to shine at Stamford Bride so far in his career, he is clearly well thought of at the club given that he has been handed a new deal.

And with current head coach Frank Lampard not afraid to give younger players a chance in light of the club’s transfer embargo, all is not lost for Rahman.

Indeed, he has previously spoken about his desire to forge a career for himself in West London despite being continually farmed out on loan.

Speaking during his time at Schalke 12 months ago, he said: “You can never say where football will guide you to. I can imagine playing for Chelsea again.

“As one of the best clubs in the world, Chelsea gives many players the chance to make their dreams come true and become better footballers.

“The club gives talented players a chance to prove themselves. At Schalke, I am now regularly in front of 60,000 spectators on the pitch, which makes me incredibly good in my development.”

Meanwhile, Kenedy is set to follow Rahman to Spain as he is poised to make a season-long loan move to Getafe.

The 23-year-old has entered the final year of his Chelsea deal and has been unable to force his way into the team since his arrival.

The winger has managed just 27 appearances in total for Chelsea, 15 of which came in the Premier League.

Kenedy spent the latter half of the 2017-18 season on loan at Newcastle and then spent the whole of last term on loan at St James’ Park.

He could join Getafe on a permanent deal next summer if he impresses because he will be available on a free transfer.
