Blues open new Emerson deal negotiations

Chelsea

Chelsea are said to have opened talks with left-back Emerson about extending his contract at Stamford Bridge until 2024.

The 25-year-old Brazil international was signed from Roma by former boss Antonio Conte for €20 million plus €9m bonuses in January 2018.

Emerson, who can play left-back or wing-back, penned a four-and-half-year deal on his arrival and still has three years of that remaining.

And, after Maurizio Sarri opted to use Emerson in Europe and domestic cup competitions last season, restricting him to just 10 Premier League outings, he is now a key man in current boss Frank Lampard’s plans.

The former Santos man has featured in every minute of all four of the Blues’ Premier League matches ahead of the international break.

Having ousted Marcos Alonso from the left side of the defence late last season, Emerson has been Chelsea’s star performer this term.

Indeed comparisons have been made between him and former favourite Ashley Cole who dominated the left-back spot for eight seasons at Stamford Bridge.

As a result, Lampard has reportedly instructed the club’s money men to draw up a new deal – worth €5m euros a season – to tie Emerson down to the club for another five years.

With Emerson shining on the left, Lampard could soon be boosted by the return of Antonio Rudiger to the centre of his defence.

The 26-year-old Germany international has been absent since the end of last season because of a knee injury.

But he has played 180 minutes of development squad football against Tottenham and Liverpool respectively so far this season.

Rudiger is currently working hard on the training ground during the international break and there is a possibility that he will line up alongside Emerson when Chelsea travel to face Wolves at Molineux in the Premier League next Saturday.
