Does Abraham deserve England call?

Tammy Abraham shining for Chelsea this season.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has suggested Tammy Abraham deserves an England call-up, and Gareth Southgate could oblige when he names his next squad.

The youngster has been thrown into the limelight at Chelsea this season. It may never be known if he would have been given the chance had it not been for the transfer ban that hit the club and prevented them signing new players over the summer.

However, Lampard does like to give youth a chance and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The good news for Abraham is that Three Lions boss Southgate is also happy to go with young talented players, so surely he will get the nod soon.

As things stand, Abraham can do no more and will be catching the eye of Southgate with his performances in the last three games, where he has bagged seven goals for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Abraham has proven he can score goals, he has done it throughout he career and was a revelation on loan at Bristol City a few seasons back, and impressed when helping Aston Villa win promotion back to the Premier League last season.

Now he is doing it on the biggest domestic stage of all, the Premier League, and if he carries on scoring, the next step is England.

Southgate is not short of attacking options and Abraham was left out of the England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kosovo and Bulgaria despite scoring four goals for Chelsea.

The England boss may have needed a bit more convincing and Abraham’s hat-trick in the 5-2 demolition of Wolves when the Premier League resumed on Saturday is the perfect start.

However he needs to carry on in the same vein to make it almost impossible for Southgate to leave him out. The next squad is a few weeks away and if Abraham can continue to bang the goals in then he should make the 23.

Another thing weighing in the player’s favour is the fact that Abraham is still eligible to represent Nigeria and the Africans have not given up hope of persuading him to play for them for the rest of his career.

Abraham would no doubt be tempted if he continues to be shunned by England, and Southgate may opt to put that scenario to bed as soon as possible if he believes the player has what it takes to play for the Three Lions for years to come.

All eyes are now on the 21-year-old to see if he can keep it up and if he can, the call from Southgate is nailed on.
