Everton linked with La Liga defender swoop

Everton are showing an interest in Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez with a view to making a January move, reports have claimed.

The Toffees find themselves sitting in the relegation zone following a poor start to the new season and the pressure is mounting on under-fire boss Marco Silva.

The Portuguese spent big money during the summer in the hope of launching a push for the top six and beyond, but it has not turned out that way.

Silva needs results fast to turn things around and save his job, starting against West Ham United, who visit Merseyside this weekend, but that is not stopping reports suggesting he has his eye on more new players.

One of which is Bilbao defender Nunez, who could be available when the winter window opens after slipping out of favour with the La Liga side.

The 22-year-old has lost his place to the more experienced Inigo Martinez, who has returned from injury, and Everton believe they could have a chance of luring him away.

The Toffees have been in the hunt for a new central defender after missing out on Kurt Zouma who stayed with Chelsea and Nunez, who made his international debut for Spain last month, is seen as a viable option.

He still has his best years ahead of him, and at just £13.5million could turn out to be a bargain signing.

Everton have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate in central defence but if injury was to strike in that area of the pitch then Silva could be in big trouble for the remainder of the campaign.

The question now remains over whether Silva will be the man trusted with bringing in new signings or whether he will be replaced in the Goodison Park hot seat in the coming weeks.
