Midfielder James has not trained this week after suffering an Achilles problem against Chelsea while full-back Fuchs is nursing an eye injury following a freak accident in training which saw a pole flick him in the face.
“It was nasty at the time, but it has cleared up,” said boss Craig Shakespeare, about Fuchs’ injury.
“We will wait for the specialist’s report. Until he has seen the specialist, I would like to hold back and see how he is. It is touch and go.”
However, there is better news on summer signing Iheanacho, who has been struggling with a toe injury since his switch from Manchester City but is in contention to make his first start at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Vicente Iborra (groin) is fit again and available for the first time this season. Robert Huth (ankle) is also nearing full fitness and might be in the squad.
Provisional squad: Schmeichel, Jakupovic, Hamer, Simpson, Fuchs, Morgan, Huth, Chilwell, Maguire, Dragovic, Wasilewski, Benalouane, Iborra, Ndidi, Amartey, Gray, Albrighton, Thomas, Mahrez, Musa, Vardy, Ulloa, Slimani, Okazaki, Iheanacho.
Paul Huntington says Preston's play-off hopes this season hinge on them getting the balance right on and off the pitch.
