Debut central for West Ham’s trip to Anfield
Manuel Pellegrini is set to name several debutants in his squad when West Ham United travel to Liverpool on Sunday.
The former Manchester City boss, who took charge at the London Stadium in May, was extremely busy in the summer transfer window, adding no less than nine new players to his squad ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.
Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop, Andriy Yarmolenko, Lukasz Fabianski, Carlos Sanchez, Lucas Perez, Fabian Balbuena, Jack Wilshere and Ryan Fredericks all joined the Hammers’ revolution and they will all be hoping to make their debuts on Sunday at Anfield.
Pellegrini has confirmed Winston Reid, Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio are still long-term casualties and will miss the trip to Merseyside, whilst Edimilson Fernandes is unlikely to feature due to an unspecified injury.
‘Pre-season has finished and I think we worked very well,’ Pellegrini said. ‘Except the three players with long-term injuries and Edimilson Fernandes, who has a slight problem, the rest of the squad is fit.
‘The difficult thing is when you don’t have options. The players know I have to pick a starting XI but they also know you need a strong squad and not just a team to be successful in the Premier League.
‘You need two players in each position and they need to train hard for every game, then it is my decision to pick the starting XI.’
