Fully-fit Shaqiri keen to show Klopp he’s ready for more

Fit-again Xherdan Shaqiri is eyeing further opportunities to impress Jurgen Klopp in the next few games as Liverpool enter their busiest period of the season.

A calf issue meant Shaqiri was not able to contribute to the Reds’ record-breaking start to a Premier League season for almost three months, but he came back with a bang by scoring in the 5-2 Merseyside derby win earlier in December.

His performance against Everton at Anfield was described as “incredible” by Jurgen Klopp and Shaqiri is now looking to push for more chances in the coming weeks.

“[I’m] definitely 100 per cent [fit],” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “Obviously I needed one or two weeks to train but of course I am happy and feeling good so I’m ready.

“I was very happy firstly that I played from the beginning [against Everton] and I wanted to give a good performance. I was very happy and to come back with a goal in the derby was amazing, [something] I’ll never forget.

“But I am looking forward now to the next games. I’m feeling good and I hope for many more.”

The Austria international came off the bench for a late cameo in last weekend’s 3-0 win at Bournemouth.

He was then an unused substitute on Tuesday as Klopp picked arguably his strongest side for the Champions League group clash with RB Salzburg.

Victory there secured top spot in Champions League Group E and a place in Monday’s last-16 draw – but Shaqiri has no preference for which team Liverpool face in the knockout stages.

The holders need not fear anyone although Shaqiri admits the team must be “spot on” against any of their potential opponents.

“Obviously we want to take a ‘smaller’ team but for me there is no smaller team: if you go through the group stage, you are not a small team, you are a very good team,” he added.

“It’s going to be tough and we need to be spot on and have a top performance to try to win these games.”
