Boro hope to keep Reds target

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will face a fight to land summer target Ben Gibson as Middlesbrough are confident he will stay at the club.

The relegated Teesiders boss Steve Agnew is hoping he can stay at the Roverside and spearhead a push for promotion next season, although having broken into the England set up he is unlikley to want to play in the Championship.

Klopp has big summer spending plans and the centre half is said to be one of his main targets as he plots an assault on the Premier League title but Agnew hopes he can stay.

Agnew, who claims there has been no interest yet, said: “He is one of the group and is determined to stay with it and see Boro back into the Premier league.

“I don’t think it is inevitable (he leaves). Ben has signed a new five year contract during the season and he has had an amazing season.

“Ben has shown that he is a consistent Premier League league player this season.”
