Gerrard faces Op

Liverpool have revealed that Steven Gerrard will miss the final two games of the season after being told he requires shoulder surgery.

The Reds skipper has been troubled by the injury for several weeks and has been playing through the pain barrier in an attempt to see out the season, having started every Premier League game to date.

But Liverpool have decided now is the best time for the midfielder to go under the knife, as they give Gerrard as much time as possible to get back to full fitness ahead of this summer’s pre-season training.

Gerrard will now join Luis Suarez and Joe Allen on the sidelines for the final two matches – away at Fulham and at home to Queens Park Rangers.

The operation also means the 32-year-old is expected to miss England’s two summer friendlies, against Republic of Ireland at Wembley on May 29 and away to Brazil on June 2.
