Hamburg baulk at Reds’ asking price

Bundesliga side Hamburg are understood to have enquired about signing Dirk Kuyt, but have been put off by the £16m asking price.

Liverpool are believed to be looking to try and offload another first-team squad member to help fund a final bid for Gareth Barry, with the Reds still seeking an agreement with Aston Villa for the England star.

Hamburg boss Martin Jol is understood to have been in touch with Anfield officials about the possibility of signing Kuyt before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

But despite having a healthy transfer kitty following the sale of Rafael van der Vaart to Real Madrid, Hamburg have been put off making an offer for the Dutch international after claiming Liverpool’s valuation is too high.

The Reds have indicated they would like to keep Kuyt, who signed for Liverpool for around £10m in the summer of 2006, but should anyone get close to the valuation, the temptation may be to sell to fund further transfer moves.
